Times of Such Decadence

Foyle’s War

I have just watched an Episode of “Foyle’s War“,
and I was struck with such force
at how utterly spoilt and decadent we have become as a society.

The Episode I watched was set after the Second World War had ended
roughly 1946,
and highlighted how just so many things were difficult despite the Allies
‘winning’ the war.

Food shortages
PTSD for returning Servicemen
No fresh fruit
Women not being allowed to work
No real eggs
Fuel shortages
Etc,
Etc,
Etc.

And TODAY?!? . . . . .

I don’t know a single child ,
who understands what it means to get an orange in your Stocking from Santa Claus.

.

.

I remember when I was a child,
that you only had access to certain fruits – if you grew them yourself in your backyard!
Strawberries being one of them,
as they were just so expensive.

Eating them on a pavlova at Christmas
just had SO much meaning!

And TODAY?!? . . . . .

I hear on mainstream media the poor treatment,
despite decades of understanding,
education
and funding
of returning Servicemen/women
who suffer from and are still not treated correctly for PTSD.

How can this be?

And TODAY?!? . . . . .

Despite barrow loads of wealth,
and our capacities to earn more and more
with one of the most expensive cities on Earth (Sydney) being on our shores
and our free education
and our world leading health system
and the high education and diversity of our politicians
and social media and technology being accessed with utter ease
and FREE support for so many elements that may still remain negative
(mental health, organ failure, illiteracy, financial support, etc.)

then how can we be such a jaded, depressed, decadent and ultimately UNHAPPY society?

How?

.

.

In just 20 days,
we celebrate our National Day
Australia Day
and I just feel like we in fact
take EVERYTHING we have
for granted.

Everything!

Most people in our society
don’t truly understand
how lucky we are
to be
Australian
in 2014.
